Rennes

Nationale 1 is where Stade Rennais Basket now measures itself, playing under a structure that changed shape only recently: in July 2024 the section folded into Union Rennes Basket, the club built in 2009 out of a merger between Rennes Pôle Association and Avenir de Rennes.

The basketball arm traces back to 1901, inside the same omnisports body that also gave Rennes its football club, and the two ran together until 1972, when football split off on its own. Basketball never carried the "Rouges et Noirs" tag that stuck to the footballers; it simply kept the Stade Rennais name through decades of quieter, amateur competition.

Silverware has come in patches, mostly regional: the Bretagne Excellence title in 1962, promotion through Division 2 in 1983. Avenir de Rennes, one of the two clubs that would later form Union Rennes Basket, once climbed as high as Pro B in 1986 before going bankrupt. The youth setup has been steadier: Bretagne Cup wins at under-17 level in 2010, 2011 and 2014, and national cadet and under-15 titles either side of those years. The senior team's closest recent brush with a national trophy came in the Coupe de France Amateur, lost in the final to Kaysersberg.

Home games are played at Salle Colette-Besson, the Bréquigny complex reworked in 2007 into a 2,142-seat hall, tucked into the same Rennes that has spent more than a century watching this section rebuild itself under one roof or another.
