«Knights»
Five straight playoff appearances since 2019 tell most of the story of where the San Juan Knights sit in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League: not a fresh arrival, but a team that has rarely had a bad season. The best regular-season record in 2019–20 and again in 2024 backs that up, even after the Knights fell short of the title in the 2021 National Finals against the Davao Occidental Tigers.
That current run traces back to April 2018, when the San Juan franchise was revived as an MPBL expansion side under the sponsorship of Go For Gold Philippines, the foundation behind the "San Juan Knights–Go For Gold" name still attached to the team. The following season they went further than any club had, beating the same Davao Occidental Tigers 3–2 in the inaugural Datu Cup final, with Mike Ayonayon taking Finals MVP. John Wilson carried that momentum further, becoming the first player to pass 1,000 career points in the MPBL and taking the league MVP award in 2019–20.
The North Division has produced the sharpest edges of that success: two division titles, in 2019 and 2020–21, and a rivalry with the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards. Playtime Filoil Centre, the 6,000-seat home the Knights play in, has hosted its share of those nights.
None of it would exist without the first Knights, put together in 1999 by then-Mayor Jinggoy Estrada and businessman Sandy Javier for the old Metropolitan Basketball Association. That team lasted barely two years, but not before beating the Negros Slashers for the 2000 national title, a championship that stood as San Juan's only one until the league itself folded in 2001.
