Kim Sun-hyung wore the Seoul SK Knights shirt from 2011 until 2025, and to be voted the league's Most Valuable Player twice, in 2013 and again in 2023.

The club did not start out as Seoul's, or as SK's. It was set up in 1997 by the Jinro Group as the Cheongju Jinro McCass. SK Telecom bought the team before its first season was even finished, renaming it the Cheongju SK Knights, and it took until June 2001 for the franchise to move to Seoul and settle on the name it carries now.

Two coaches gave the club its titles and had their numbers retired for it: Moon Kyung-eun won the 2017–18 championship with jersey number 10, and Chun Hee-chul followed it up in 2021–22 wearing 13. That second title leaned heavily on Jameel Warney, named the Korean Basketball League's Foreign MVP that same season.

Across the city, the Seoul Samsung Thunders wait every season for the S-Derby, a fixture that carries the weight of the wider rivalry between SK Group and Samsung Electronics rather than just points in the table. The Knights have had the better of the recent finals meetings between the two, though Samsung has pushed them to a decisive game more than once.

There is no academy behind any of this. The club has always gone to the university system for its Korean players, drafting rather than developing, which is how it found the captain who would spend the next fourteen years wearing its colours.
