LG Sakers

Changwon is a shipbuilding and machinery city on the south coast, and for most of its recent basketball history it lived under the shadow of bigger names in the Korean Basketball League. LG put a corporate team there in stages: a semiconductor-division side formed in 1994, entered the league in 1997 under the Gyeongnam name tied to the wider province, then narrowed to Changwon itself for the 1998–99 season once the club settled on the city as its permanent base. It has stayed there since.

The Sakers name comes from the saker falcon, picked for speed rather than any local reference, and it took the club a long time to hunt down the trophy that matters most. Two runner-up finishes, in 2000–01 and again in 2013–14, preceded a first outright KBL Championship only in 2024–25, won 4–3 over the Seoul SK Knights. The 2013–14 season also brought the club's first regular-season title, built around Kim Jong-gyu, who was named Rookie of the Year that year and became one of the pieces of that near-miss campaign. A second regular-season title followed in 2025–26.

Changwon Gymnasium holds around 6,000, modest by league standards, which has made the arena feel full even on ordinary nights during the title run.

The club's defining fixture is against Seoul Samsung Thunders, a corporate derby that carries the LG–Samsung business rivalry onto the court and gets called the Chaebol Rivalry Derby locally — a contest that has little to do with the standings and everything to do with which conglomerate's name is on the shirt.
