Seoul Thunders

Jamsil Arena sits inside the Seoul Sports Complex in Songpa-gu, a basketball hall built to hold 11,069 for the sport, and it has been the club's home since the move into the capital in 2001.

The club began life on 28 February 1978 as the Samsung men's basketball team, backed by Samsung Electronics. It carried the Samsung Electronics name through the 1980s and 1990s, then moved to Suwon in 1997 and played there as the Suwon Samsung Thunders until 2001, when the return to Seoul brought the current name, Seoul Samsung Thunders.

The best of those years in Seoul came quickly.

None of that has carried into the present. The Thunders finished bottom of the KBL in four straight seasons from 2021–22 through 2024–25. The rivalry with the Seoul SK Knights, known as the S-Derby, remains the fixture supporters circle regardless of the table.

Seo Jang-hoon is the name still attached to the club's better days. He played for the Thunders from 2002 to 2007, won two KBL championships and two MVP awards in that stretch.
