Ulsan is a Hyundai manufacturing city on Korea's southeastern coast, and the basketball team that carries the company's parts subsidiary in its name has followed the money there. It started in April 1986 as an amateur side under Kia Motors, turned professional in the Korean Basketball League's inaugural 1997 season as Busan Kia Enterprise, and won the title that very year, beating Wonju Naray Blue Bird. The Busan chapter did not last: money troubles and an unhelpful city government over the Sajik Gymnasium lease, on top of Kia's restructuring after the 1997 Asian financial crisis and its takeover by Hyundai Motor the following year, pushed the club out. Hyundai Mobis picked up the sponsorship and moved the team to Ulsan in 2001, where it has stayed, working through the names Ulsan Mobis Autonians, then Ulsan Mobis Phoebus, and since 2017 Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus.

The club plays out of Dongchun Gymnasium, which holds 5,831, and its best years ran under head coach Yoo Jae-hak, who took charge in 2004 and stayed until 2022. He drafted Yang Dong-geun that same year, and Yang went on to collect two regular-season MVP awards and Finals MVP honours in both 2013 and 2015 before returning to coach the club himself in 2025. Between them, that stretch produced most of the club's seven KBL championships, including a clean sweep of Seoul SK Knights in the 2013 finals.

Before the professional era, the amateur side already had continental pedigree, winning the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in 1992 as Kia Motors. What has eluded the club is the KBL Cup, lost in the final in both 2022 and 2023.

Their fiercest opposition comes from Busan KCC Egis, a rivalry known as the Hyundai Derby that dates back to finals meetings in 1998 and 1999 and has kept its edge ever since.
