Barry Ryan Bannan

Barry Bannan is best remembered at Sheffield Wednesday for the 2023 League One Play-Off Final against Barnsley, where he captained the side to promotion to the Championship. It was the high point of a stay that began in August 2015 and produced 477 appearances and 35 goals.

The strike that reached a national audience came in 2021–22, a 40-yard shot against MK Dons that was named EFL Goal of the Season. That spring he was League One Player of the Month for March, and he was picked in the PFA League One Team of the Year in both 2021–22 and 2022–23. Wednesday's own supporters chose him as Player of the Season in 2020–21, 2021–22 and 2023–24.

He came through the academy at Aston Villa, whose youth side won the Premier Academy League in 2007–08, and signed his first professional contract in 2008. He made 64 first-team appearances for Villa and scored once. Loans took him to Derby County, Leeds United and Blackpool. With Blackpool in 2009–10 he played in the Championship play-off final that took them into the Premier League. Crystal Palace signed him in September 2013, and he had a loan spell at Bolton Wanderers in early 2015 before moving to Hillsborough.

For Scotland he won 27 caps between 2010 and 2017 without scoring. His debut was a friendly against the Faroe Islands in November 2010. His last appearance came in October 2017, in 2018 World Cup qualifying, and he was left out of the squad for Euro 2020.

In January 2026 he joined Millwall on an 18-month contract. He played 16 times for them, including a substitute appearance in the play-off semi-final defeat by Hull City. In July 2026, after Arise Capital Partners took over Sheffield Wednesday, he went back to the club on a free transfer and a one-year deal.
