About the player
Gabriel Otegbayo is described as the first youth player Cobh Ramblers had sold since Roy Keane. The defender from Cork came through Ringmahon Rangers and then the Cobh academy, and in August 2022 he moved to Burnley to join their Under-18 side.
His route to a professional contract was not a straight one. In the 2023/24 season he played once for Stoke City Under-21 in Premier League 2, against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21 on 25 September 2023. He left Burnley in early 2024 as a free agent, and on 1 March 2024 signed his first professional contract with Sheffield Wednesday after a trial.
His first-team debut came as a substitute in the EFL Cup against Hull City on 14 August 2024. His Championship debut followed on 5 November 2024 against Norwich City. He scored his first professional goal on 4 January 2025, a late equaliser against Millwall.
Otegbayo has since made 53 league appearances for Wednesday and scored three goals. At international level he has won two caps for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 side, making his debut in a 3–1 win over Hungary Under-21 in March 2025.
