About the player
David Watson won both the PFA Scotland and the SFWA Young Player of the Year awards in 2023–24. Before that he had played youth football at Caledonian FC.
He signed his first professional contract on 3 September 2021 and made his senior debut that same month. Kilmarnock won the Scottish Championship that season, and Watson was in the squad, though his only appearance came as a substitute in the Scottish Challenge Cup. The following season, 2022–23, he became a regular starter. It also brought a red card against St Johnstone in May 2023.
Watson made 115 appearances for Kilmarnock.
At international level he has played for Scotland at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level. He captained the Under-21s and scored once for them. He nine times wore the Under-19 shirt and won one cap at Under-20.
In January 2026 Bolton Wanderers had a bid of £500,000 rejected. Watson was later linked with Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen, Lazio and Bologna. In the end he left Kilmarnock as a free agent and joined Bolton on 1 June 2026 on a three-year deal. Kilmarnock received compensation for his development, the size of which was not disclosed.
