About the player
Max Conway spent the 2025–26 season as Bolton Wanderers' first-choice left-back and finished it in a play-off final win. Bolton beat Stockport County 4–1 at Wembley to secure promotion to the Championship. Conway played 48 matches that season: 41 in the league, two in the FA Cup, one in the EFL Cup and four in the play-offs. He did not score.
He joined Bolton's academy in 2010, aged seven, and came through the youth ranks. He played for the B Team and appeared as a substitute for the first team in 2020–21. His first professional contract followed in June 2022. Bolton then sent him out on loan to build experience, one spell after another over four seasons.
The first was at Buxton, starting in November 2022. It was meant to run to January 2023 and was extended to the end of the season. In August 2023 he moved to Rochdale and played seven times before returning in October. He then went to AFC Fylde, again extended from January to the end of the season.
The Crewe Alexandra loan, from August 2024, was the one that changed his standing. It began as a season-long deal, and he played every league game for the club. Crewe's supporters voted him their Player of the Year.
He returned to Bolton for 2025–26 as a regular rather than a loanee. In October 2025 he signed a contract extension to 2029, and the play-off final came at the end of his first season as a fixture in the side.
