George Damien Nurse

George Nurse's career at Shrewsbury Town was defined as much by absence as by presence. A ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in September 2022 kept the left-back out for a large part of that season, a setback that came in the middle of a five-year spell in which he otherwise made 96 appearances, 81 of them in the league, without scoring. He returned from the injury to remain a regular fixture before loan spells at Yeovil Town and Solihull Moors in 2025. In January 2026 he left Shrewsbury by mutual consent and joined Cheltenham Town on a free transfer, making 19 appearances, 17 of them in the league.

Nurse came through the Bristol City academy, staying with the club from 2018 to 2021 without making a senior first-team appearance for them. Instead, he built his experience away from Ashton Gate, going out on loan to Weston-super-Mare, then Newport County, then Walsall, gathering minutes at senior level before Bristol City let him leave. He joined Shrewsbury Town in July 2021 for an undisclosed fee, and it was there that he developed into a first-team regular.

A left-footed defender who plays at left-back, Nurse has not been called up to any England youth side and has not collected individual awards or team honours over the course of his career to date. His move to Cheltenham represents a fresh start after the disruption of the ACL injury, with the early sample of appearances there suggesting the club has turned to him as a settled part of the back line.
