About the player
Thirty-one goals in all competitions in 2022–23 made James Berry-McNally the top scorer at Macclesfield. Twenty-four of them came in 32 league appearances, which earned him the Northern Premier League Division One West Golden Boot. Macclesfield won that division.
The route to that point began in Liverpool's youth system, which he left in December 2016. He joined Wigan Athletic the same month on scholarship forms. He was named as an unused substitute once, in November 2017. In November 2019 he moved to Hull City after a compensation deal with Wigan, and he made his senior debut there in February 2020. His contract was ended by mutual consent in July 2021.
He signed for Altrincham in August 2021 and went straight on loan to Macclesfield for the 2021–22 season. He scored 11 goals in 30 appearances in the North West Counties Premier Division, and Macclesfield won the title and promotion. He scored twice against Ashton Athletic in the match that secured it. In March 2022 he signed for Macclesfield permanently.
Chesterfield signed him in August 2023 on a three-year deal. That season the club won the National League title and promotion to League Two. In January 2025 he moved permanently to Wycombe Wanderers, and in August 2025 he returned to Chesterfield on a season-long loan.
He is right-footed and has played on the left wing.
