About the player
João Mendes plays as a left-back, coming through the Vitória de Guimarães academy after joining the under-19 side in 2018 and progressing to Vitória Guimarães II the following year. He was signed by FC Porto on a free transfer in July 2021. He spent his time there largely with Porto B, with occasional appearances for the first team.
In July 2024, Mendes returned to Vitória de Guimarães, the club that had first developed him, joining on a free transfer from Porto B and signing a contract that runs until 2028. He now wears the number 13 shirt there.
Born in Marco de Canaveses, Mendes is left-footed. He represented Portugal at under-17 level, including a call-up to the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
His path through youth football took him through several clubs before Guimarães became his footballing home — spells at Académico Amarante, AR Tuías, Marco and FC Penafiel all shaped him before he settled into the Vitória academy system.
