About the player
Luca Stephenson played much of the 2024–25 season with a double hernia. He carried it for four months and kept playing. Dundee United finished fourth in the Scottish Premiership and qualified for Europe. The club named him their Young Player of the Season.
He had arrived at Dundee United in August 2024 on a season-long loan from Liverpool. He made his debut on 18 August and scored his first senior goal that month, in a 2–0 win over St Johnstone. He played 34 games over the campaign.
Stephenson grew up in Horden, County Durham, and came through the academy at Sunderland. In September 2018, at 15, he moved to Liverpool, in a transfer reported at £500,000. He signed his first professional contract there in September 2020 and extended it in February 2022. In September 2023 he joined AFC Barrow until the end of that season, his first spell in senior football away from Liverpool.
Dundee United took him back in August 2025 for a second loan. That arrangement ended in July 2026, when Bolton Wanderers signed him permanently from Liverpool for £700,000.
Stephenson has played for England at youth level. He has not been capped by the senior side.
