Luke Butterfield

Luke Butterfield came up through Everton's academy without ever making it into the first team. Signed from Blackburn Rovers at under-12 level in 2014, he worked his way through the youth ranks, took a scholarship in 2020 and turned professional the same year. His clearest mark on Everton's history came in the FA Youth Cup: in the fourth round of the 2020–21 competition, he scored a 98th-minute winner against Manchester City that sent the club through to the quarter-finals. He was part of the squad that reached the fifth round the following season, but a first-team breakthrough never followed — his only involvement at senior level was a place on the substitutes' bench in September 2024.

When his Everton contract ran out at the end of the 2024–25 season, Butterfield joined Chesterfield on a free transfer, signing a two-year deal. He spent the first half of the following season out on loan at Accrington Stanley, where he made 13 league appearances and scored once before a further loan move, to AFC Fylde, took him into the 2026–27 campaign.

Internationally, Butterfield has represented Scotland at youth level rather than England. He won a single cap for the under-16s in 2019, then added five appearances and a goal for the under-19s across 2021 and 2022.
