About the player
Melker Widell signed his first professional contract with IF Elfsborg in January 2022, having been in the club's youth academy since 2018. Long-term injuries meant he did not play a minute in the Allsvenskan, and he left in December 2023.
The route back was through the lower divisions. Widell joined Norrby IF on a free transfer in January 2024 and played seven matches in Division 1. That summer he went back to Nossebro IF, the club where he had started out as a child, and on 1 August moved on to IK Gauthiod, again on a free. Across the 2024 and 2025 seasons he made 25 appearances for Gauthiod.
Nossebro had been the start of it all. He played in their youth teams until 2015 and turned out for the senior side on and off between 2016 and 2021, alongside his time in the Elfsborg academy.
The move to Swansea City came in January 2025, on a four-year deal running to June 2029. He played 11 league games and scored twice. He returned to Swansea in July 2025 and now plays in the Championship as a central midfielder.
At youth level Widell won 14 caps for Sweden's under-17s without scoring. He has not yet played for the senior national team.
