About the player
Szabolcs Szalay scored in the 2023 Hungarian Cup final. Zalaegerszegi TE beat Budafok 2–0 after extra time, and the win gave the club the Magyar Kupa in 2022–23.
He came through youth football in his home city, at VLS Veszprém and then Illés Akadémia, where he spent six years from 2013. In July 2019 he joined the senior squad at Szombathelyi Haladás. Over two seasons there he played 21 league games and scored twice. That same year he was in the Hungary U17 squad that reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship.
Szalay moved to Zalaegerszegi TE in January 2021, but much of his time there was spent elsewhere. He went on loan to Tiszakécske for 2021–22 and played 14 league games, scoring two goals. A loan at Vasas followed in 2023–24, with nine league appearances. His longest spell away came in Slovenia with NK Nafta 1903, where in 2024–25 he played 33 league matches and scored three goals.
Csíkszereda signed him on a free transfer in July 2025. In his first season there he scored four goals and made one assist in 33 league matches.
