About the player
Sopuruchukwu Obieri came through Cheltenham Town's academy, and the club has kept a close eye on him from an early age: he made his senior debut in an EFL Trophy match against West Ham United Under-21s in November 2023, at 15 years and 303 days becoming Cheltenham's youngest ever player, a record that had previously belonged to Cameron Walters. Two months later he was offered a scholarship to train full-time within the academy setup.
His schoolboy record hints at his potential: he once scored 86 goals in a single season for the Gloucester Primary Schools FA team, beating a mark set by Zack Kotwica.
Since then Obieri has been sent out to gain senior experience away from Cheltenham. A loan at Worcester City through the 2024/25 season ended in promotion from the Northern Premier League Midland Division. He moved on to Hungerford Town in January 2025, then joined Gloucester City on loan in July 2025.
