AS Gabes

Nobody at Zliza talks about titles, because there aren't any to talk about. The nearest thing to a landmark season came in 2010–11, when the side held on for 13th place in Ligue Professionnelle 1 — a modest line, but the highest AS Gabès has managed in the top flight. Three seasons later it went a round further than usual in the Coupe de Tunisie, reaching the last sixteen before the run ended.

That is the shape of the club's history: spells in the top division followed by drops back into Ligue 2, promotion chased and lost and chased again. Gabès has stayed a Ligue 2 club for most of its life since forming in 1978, and the record reflects a side that has had to fight its way back up more often than it has had to defend a place at the top.

The Stade Municipal de Gabès, known locally as Stade de Zrig, holds 15,000 and gives the team a nickname that has stuck harder than any result — Zliza, alongside Kawasser, both worn with more affection than the trophy cabinet would suggest. Red and black remain the colours regardless of which division the club finds itself in.

For now, the task is the one this club has faced for most of its history: hold a place in the higher tier long enough to build something on it, rather than treat a promotion as a stop before the next relegation.
