On the last day of the 2017-18 season, Ittihad Tanger held off Wydad Casablanca by a single point to take the Botola Pro title.

The team traces back to 1957, when it was founded as Unión Deportiva de Tánger. In 1983 a reorganisation folded in other local sides and the club took the name Ittihad Riadi Tanger. It is still known by an older nickname, Arousat Achamal , the Bride of the North.

Moghreb Tétouan is the closest rival, and matches between the two are billed as the Derby of the North. Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti came through the Ittihad Tanger ranks before Morocco picked him for the 2018 World Cup squad.

The club left Stade de Marchan in 2011 for the Grand Stade de Tanger, rebuilt ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. The new configuration opened in November 2025, taking capacity to 75,500.
