The Tripoli International Stadium, known locally as June 11 Stadium, took on its current 50,000-seat form after renovations finished in March 2024, and it is here that Libya's national side plays out its home fixtures, wrapped in the red, black and green of the flag. The ground has hosted continental finals before: in 1982 Libya staged the Africa Cup of Nations itself and went all the way to the final, where a goalless draw with Ghana was settled 7-6 on penalties, leaving the runners-up medal as the closest the team has come to the continental title.
The federation dates to 1962, joining FIFA two years later and the Confederation of African Football the year after that, though the national side traces its own beginnings back to 1918 and did not play an official international until 1953. The nickname, the Mediterranean Knights, sits above a record that leans more on continental football than the World Cup, which Libya has never reached; the nearest attempt came in 1986, when Morocco eliminated them in the final qualifying round.
One title stands apart from the runner-up finishes in the Arab Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations: the 2014 African Nations Championship, contested by home-based players only, won on penalties against Ghana by 4-3. Coaching turnover has dogged the side since; Adel Amrouche walked out in 2018 over unpaid wages and interference from above.
Ahmed Ben Soueid remains the name attached to the record books, 50 goals scored between 1964 and 1977, a tally that has stood through every generation that has since worn the shirt.
