Kaunas, June 1923: Lithuania's federation had only just been let into FIFA, and the team took the field for its first international against Estonia and lost 0-5. A year later came something worse, a 0-10 defeat to Egypt at the Olympics. That early exposure to the game at its harshest sat alongside real ambition — Lithuania was already at the 1924 Olympics.
The Soviet occupation erased the federation in 1940, and it took until 1991, with independence restored, to get back into FIFA and a year later into UEFA. The team never reached a World Cup or a European Championship, but the Baltic Cup, the oldest international tournament in Europe, became a regular fixture — ten titles since the competition resumed after independence, second only to Latvia in the tournament's overall history. The most one-sided result of the modern era, a 7-0 win over Estonia in 1995, belongs to that rivalry.
Since 2022 the side has played its home games at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium in Kaunas.
