Penafiel FC

Penafiel spend most of their seasons in the second tier, and the club's ceiling has been set for four decades now by two tenth-place finishes in the Primeira Liga, in 1980–81 and 1987–88.

The club came out of a merger. Two local sides, União Desportiva Penafidelense and Sporting Clube de Penafiel, folded into one on 8 February 1951, and the red and black came across from the Sporting side.

The single afternoon the town still talks about came in 1981–82, when Penafiel beat FC Porto 1–0 to take the Taça de Honra da AF Porto. Four years later they reached the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal and Benfica put them out; that is as far as the club has ever gone in the competition.

Jorge Costa made his professional debut here on loan in 1990–91, a teenager sent down from Porto to find out whether he could handle men's football. He could. He went back and eventually captained Porto to the Champions League. Sérgio Conceição arrived on the same terms three seasons later.

Home is the Estádio Municipal 25 de Abril, 5,230 places.

No national league title, no cup. In seventy-five years the club has won a district championship and a regional honours cup, and its record in the top flight has never been better than mid-table.
