União Desportiva Oliveirense formed on 25 October 1922, when Quirino and Lourenço Praça broke away from the existing Sport Clube Oliveirense over a lack of financial backing and built a new club around it.

The club has spent a single season in the Primeira Liga, in 1945/46. Its deepest run in the Taça de Portugal came far later, in 2011/12, when it reached the semi-final and lost there to Académica, who went on to win the competition outright. In 2007/08 it went through the entire first stage of the Segunda Divisão without losing a match, a run few Portuguese clubs of that era could match, and the same season brought the national Segunda Divisão B (Zona Centro) title.

Ownership changed hands in November 2022, when the Japanese company Onodera Group, which also holds Yokohama FC in the J.League, took a majority stake in the club. The academy's better-known recent product is defender Diogo Casimiro, who came through at Oliveirense before spells at Porto and Braga and returned to the club in 2023.

Home games are played at the Estádio Carlos Osório, which holds 1,750.
