Rathfriland

Banbridge Town sits ten miles up the road from Rathfriland, and whenever the two County Down sides meet in the Premier Intermediate League, the fixture is billed as a derby rather than just another match on the card. That rivalry says more about Rathfriland Rangers than any single league position does.

The club took shape in 1962, playing first in the Newcastle & District League before moving into the Northern Amateur Football League in 1986, where it stayed for the best part of four decades. Honours came steadily rather than all at once: two Intermediate Cups, in 2021 and 2022; the NAFL Premier Division three years running, 2021 to 2023; and the Bob Radcliffe Cup, claimed six times, most recently in 2026.

In 2023 that steady accumulation turned into something new. Rathfriland won a play-off and stepped into the NIFL pyramid for the first time in its history, joining the Premier Intermediate League. The step did not prove to be one-off: finishing third in the 2025/26 season carried the club up again, into the NIFL Championship.

Home games are played at Iveagh Park, a ground whose capacity nobody quite agrees on — some put it at 1,000, others closer to 500. The players wear white and black, which is where the nickname, the Whites, comes from.
