Ómar Pérez spent nine years in the Santa Fe shirt and left with nine titles. When sixteen friends, alumni of Gimnasio Moderno and Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, met at Café del Rhin on 28 February 1941, they called the team Independiente to mark it out from clubs backed by investors, and Santa Fe after the passage where they sat and the old nickname for people from Bogotá.

Two more titles followed within a decade, in 1958 and 1960, on his way to a World Cup two years later. The championship count has since reached ten, with the most recent Apertura won in 2025.

Nothing in the trophy case matches 2015, when Santa Fe beat Argentina's Huracán on penalties to win the Copa Sudamericana. A year later, in Japan, they beat Kashima Antlers 1–0 for the Suruga Bank Championship.

Home games are played at El Campín, in front of a crowd that can run past 36,000, in the red-and-white that gave the team its best-known nickname, Los Cardenales.
