Viborg Fodsports Forening began on 1 April 1896 as a general athletics society — gymnastics, cricket, hockey, boxing, wrestling — with football only added to the programme some years later. By 1929 the other disciplines had split into their own bodies and the club settled into being purely a football side, a shape it has kept ever since.

The one Superliga title has never come, but Viborg have made a habit of winning the level below it: the 1. Division four times, in 1980, 1989, 2012–13 and 2020–21. The 1999–2000 season stands apart. Viborg beat AaB 1–0 in the Danish Cup final, then saw off Herfølge BK on penalties after a 1–1 draw to add the Danish Super Cup.

The rivalry that matters most is with FC Midtjylland, the Mid-Jutland derby known locally as the "hadets opgør" — the match of hatred. Thomas Frandsen, once Viborg's captain, became a fixture of that fixture for the wrong reasons after his move across to Midtjylland. On the pitch, Søren Frederiksen's number 22 has been retired after 134 Superliga goals, the second-highest total in the league's history, scored between 2001 and 2005. Jakob Glerup holds the club's all-time appearance record with 471 games, a tally built as a player before he stayed on as manager.

Home matches are played at Energi Viborg Arena, formerly Viborg Stadion, which holds 10,000 with 9,566 of those seated. The green shirts give the club its nickname, De Grønne.
