This arrangement differs from standard league structures, as it involves only two sides meeting for a defined period rather than a pyramid system with promotion and relegation.

The most recent iteration of this series took place in January 2025 in Rajkot, India, at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. It marked the first-ever bilateral series between the Ireland Women and India Women teams, ending a hiatus in their One Day International (ODI) meetings since 2006. The tour consisted of three matches, all played as part of the ICC Women's Championship for the 2022–2025 cycle, which serves as the qualification pathway for the Women's Cricket World Cup.

The series concluded with India Women winning 3–0. The final match produced historic records in the sport. India set the highest team total in Women's ODI history with 435/5, while also securing the largest victory margin in the format with a win by 304 runs. Pratika Rawal scored 154 runs in that match and was named Player of the Series with 310 runs across the tour. Smriti Mandhana also achieved a 70-ball century, noted as the fastest by an Indian woman in ODIs.

The Ireland Women's national team was established in 1982 by the Irish Women's Cricket Union and played its first ODI in 1987. India Women were established in 1976, with their first Test match that same year, governed by the BCCI which was founded in 1928.
