Casey Murphy

In her first season of senior professional football, in France, Casey Murphy was named the best goalkeeper in D1 Féminine and picked in the league's Best XI. She was 22, playing for Montpellier HSC, and had arrived from college football at Rutgers, where she twice took the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year award, in 2015 and 2017.

The move home came in May 2019, to OL Reign, where she played 19 matches in her first NWSL season and six more in the 2020 campaign cut short by the pandemic. That October she was traded to North Carolina Courage, along with allocation money, in the deal that sent Crystal Dunn the other way.

North Carolina is where she became a first-choice goalkeeper and stayed one. She won the NWSL Challenge Cup with the Courage in 2022 and again in 2023. In 2024 she played every available minute for the club — an iron woman season. A league title or an NWSL Shield never came during her years in Cary.

The national team call came on 26 November 2021, when she made her debut for the United States against Australia in a 3–0 win. As of October 2024 she had 20 caps and 15 clean sheets. She was a finalist for NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year in 2019, without winning it.

Murphy left the Courage as a free agent after the 2025 season. In December 2025 she signed with Boston Legacy FC, the NWSL's new franchise, on a deal running to the end of 2029 with an option for 2030. The 2026 season is the club's first.
