About the player
His debut came on 1 February 2026, in round 24 of Liga I against Csikszereda. FCSB won 1-0 through a goal from Juri Cisotti, and Popa started in place of Ștefan Târnovanu — a change made to satisfy the league's rule on fielding under-21 players. It meant father and son shared a matchday, with Marius still on the goalkeeping staff.
Since then Popa has kept his place in the rotation rather than disappearing back into the reserves. He made 13 league appearances and one in the Romanian Cup across 2025/26, and has already added three more league games in the early stages of 2026/27. He has yet to win a trophy with the first team.
At youth international level, Popa was named in Romania's U19 squad for the Euro 2026 qualifying elite round in March 2026 but did not play, serving as backup goalkeeper throughout. He has not featured for the senior Romania national team.
