About the player
Ștefan Târnovanu started out in the Politehnica Iași academy and made his first-team debut there in 2018, before two seasons away on loan at Ștința Miroslava and Sportul Snagov. FCSB signed him in September 2019 for a fee reported at 200,000 euros, with Politehnica keeping a 15% sell-on clause; other reports put the transfer as high as 350,000 euros.
His path to the first team was not immediate. Târnovanu made his competitive debut for FCSB only in May 2021, in a 0-1 defeat to Universitatea Craiova, and it took until March 2022, after a run of uneven performances from Andrei Vlad, for him to establish himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.
Târnovanu made his senior Romania debut in November 2022, a 5-0 friendly win over Moldova, and was named in the squad for Euro 2024 without featuring.
In May 2025, FCSB owner Gigi Becali said Târnovanu had received no offers from other clubs and would stay at the club, despite reported interest from Napoli, Udinese, Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Panathinaikos, with his release clause set at 10 million euros.
