Adelaide Cobras

Neither carries a derby name anybody agrees on.

The club began as somewhere for young Cypriot-Australians in Adelaide to spend their weekends. Its founders in 1972 called it Adelaide Omonia — omonia is Greek for unity, and the unity meant was between the migrants and the city they had arrived in, not between players.

The name changed in 1994, to Adelaide Cobras, to reach past the Cypriot community; the registered name still carries Omonia in it, so both versions of the club sit on the same paperwork.

The season worth dwelling on is 2006. The seniors took the State League 3rd Division, the reserves won their competition and the under-18s won theirs — a treble that said more about the junior programme than any single promotion. The 2009 FFSA Premier League title remains the highest the seniors have climbed.

State League 2 titles came in 2020 and 2022, the first of them followed by a grand final lost to Eastern United by a single goal.

The grandstand seats 1,000. With the banks and the standing room around it, Weigall Oval holds 8,000.
