Cumberland United

In 1990 the club swapped chocolate and gold for green and gold, the colours it still plays in. The change came almost half a century after senior football began at Cumberland, and it marked a break with the club's earliest identity rather than any change of ground: AA Bailey Reserve, in the Adelaide suburb of Clarence Gardens, has stayed the address, a 3,000-capacity ground.

The most productive stretch came in 2016. Cumberland took the 2nd Division title and, in the same year, the State League Premiership and Championship — the league's two separate prizes, one for the table and one for the play-offs. Three years later the Championship came back to Clarence Gardens. Before that the club's honours had arrived in longer gaps: 1st Division titles in 1978 and 1999, the Federation Cup in 1978 and again in 2009, thirty-one years apart.

What the Foxes are better known for outside South Australia is what has left the club. Joe Gauci came through here on his way to the Socceroos and Aston Villa. So did Charlotte Grant and Kyra Cooney-Cross, both since capped by the Matildas, and Ayom Majok, who went on to play for Sudan.

The fixtures that fill AA Bailey are against Croydon Kings and North Eastern MetroStars — derbies in the local sense.

Junior teams were running at Cumberland from 1941. The senior club followed in 1943, and everything above grew out of those two years.
