Al Nejmeh

When Nejmeh meet Al-Ansar, the 5,000 seats at the Rafic Hariri Stadium in Manara are no use to anyone. The Beirut derby moves across the city to the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium, where close to 50,000 can get in. Newer quarrels with Al-Ahed and Salam Zgharta have their own edge, but neither empties a smaller ground the way the Ansar match does.

The away shirt turns the same two colours the other way round, white first.

The league titles arrived in two clusters separated by a quarter of a century: 1972–73 and 1974–75, then nothing until 1999–2000, after which Nejmeh won six more in a run that stretched to 2013–14. In 2005 they reached the AFC Cup final and lost it to Al-Faisaly of Jordan; semi-finals followed in 2006 and 2007. Before any of that, in 1981–82, they had gone to the final of the Arab Club Champions Cup and been beaten by Al-Shorta.

Hassan Maatouk, one of the highest scorers Lebanon has produced, spent his best years here. So did Ali Hamam, a defender who captained the side and won 56 caps.
