São José do Rio Preto, in the interior of São Paulo state, has had two clubs to argue over since 1946: América and Rio Preto Esporte Clube. The Derby Rio-pretense between them started that same year, and by 2014 América led the head-to-head count, 34 wins to Rio Preto's 19.

América itself — Diabo Rubro, the Red Devil, to its own crowd — took red and white as its colours that year, copying the América in Rio de Janeiro its founders admired. Home games are played at the Estádio Benedito Teixeira, known around town as the Teixeirão, which holds 34,088.

The honours board carries nothing national, only regional silverware: the São Paulo state second division, won in 1957, 1963 and 1999, plus the Taça dos Invictos and a run of invitational cups picked up between the 1950s and the 1980s. The academy sent players beyond the state anyway — Marcos Senna left it to win the 2010 World Cup with Spain, Luan to take Olympic gold in 2016, Igor Gomes to join São Paulo.

The U20 side carries that pipeline forward, playing in the Paulista Sub-20 against the youth teams of Santos, Ponte Preta and Ferroviária. In August 2026, the senior team it feeds gave the city something to talk about: promotion to Série A4, ending a wait of 25 years.
