Neymar spent five years in the youth ranks at Estádio Ulrico Mursa before Santos signed him away at twelve. Paulo César de Araújo, later known as Pagão, went the same route in the early 1950s; Elba de Pádua Lima, better known as Tim, came through the club in 1936.

Associação Atlética Portuguesa was founded on 20 November 1917, a separate club from the Lusa of the capital despite sharing its name and colours — a red-and-green kit with four green stripes across the chest, worn to honour the Portuguese flag. Locally the club is known as Briosa, a nickname that runs through every level of the institution, from the first team down to the youth sides, and exists partly to keep it distinct from Portuguesa Desportos, whose supporters are Lusa.

The under-20 side plays its home matches at Ulrico Mursa, the same ground the first team uses, in front of a capacity of 7,635. Its record in the Campeonato Paulista Sub-20 is built around four state titles — 1958, 1973, 1990 and 2010 — the last of those won against Palmeiras across two legs, 1-0 and 2-1. A run to the final in 2022 ended the other way, beaten by Corinthians.

Two fixtures carry weight beyond the table. Against Santos FC it is simply the derby of the city, both clubs sharing Santos as home. Against Jabaquara it is the Clássico das Colônias, a meeting rooted in the rivalry between the city's Portuguese and Spanish immigrant communities, first played in 1919.
