Alagoinhas already had a football side to root for when a group of local supporters broke away and set up their own club on 2 April 1970, choosing white, black and red as its colours and taking the nickname Carcará. The team found its footing quickly enough: in 1972 it reached the semi-finals of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, and that same year Garrincha turned out for Atlético in a friendly at Carneirão.

The state title took longer. Atlético lost the Campeonato Baiano final in 1973 and again in 2020 before finally winning it in 2021, then repeating in 2022 under coach Agnaldo Liz. Robert stands as the club's all-time top scorer with 62 goals.

Locally, the games that matter most are against UNIRB, in what is known as the Clássico de Alagoinhas. The under-20 side has done its own winning in recent years, taking the Campeonato Baiano Sub-20 in 2021, 2022 and again in 2025, after finishing runners-up in 2020 — much the same pattern of near misses turned into titles that the senior team went through a few years earlier.
