It took the name and shirt of FC Barcelona, and with them the nickname Barça do Rio.

The club is the direct continuation of Internacional Futebol Clube of Curicica, refounded under the same directors, Valdeir Penudo and Augusto Vieira, on 5 December 1999. Thiago Silva came through its youth academy before the defender's career took him far beyond Curicica.

Barcelona RJ has never won a title. Since then it has settled into the Campeonato Carioca Série C, a division whose rank in the state pyramid has shifted between third, fourth and fifth tier as the Rio football federation has restructured it over the years, and where Barcelona RJ has appeared without ever taking the title, including as a Group A entrant in 2014 and again in 2022.

Home games are played at the club's own ground, the Estádio Barcelona Esporte Clube, which holds 5,000.
