János Simon spent sixteen seasons on the Honvéd bench and floor at once, coaching the side while still playing, and left with fourteen championships to his name.

Honvéd's record reads as a monopoly rather than a rivalry: thirty-two league titles between 1952 and 1997, including an eleven-year unbroken run from 1976 to 1986. Seventeen Hungarian Cups sit alongside it. Between them, Simon, Tibor Czinkán and Sándor Gellér accounted for well over forty of those championships across their careers.

The name itself did not stay still. Between 1992 and 1994 the club merged with Tungsram SC and played as Tungsram-Honvéd, taking the nickname Budapest Falcons and a falcon for a badge; sponsorship carried the Danone name through the rest of the decade before Budapesti Honvéd SE returned in 1999. By then the old dominance was already fading, and in 2001 the club lost a relegation playoff to MAFC, ending fifty-one years in the top division. What followed was two seasons in the third tier and then two decades in the second, NB I/B, before Szabolcs Baksa's side won the Piros Group in 2021–22 and took Honvéd back to the NB I/A.

They play now at the Ludovika Aréna, a ground that holds 1,350. Zlatko Jovanović took over as head coach and extended his contract in May 2025, guiding the team to tenth place that season.
