The Coca-Cola Arena sits in the middle of Dubai's City Walk, a 17,000-seat indoor venue, and it gave the city a hall large enough to stage a franchise with continental ambitions rather than a local one.

Dubai Basketball, playing as Dubai BC, was only founded in 2023, backed by the Al Naboodah Group under chairman Abdulla Saeed Juma Al Naboodah. Dejan Kamenjašević took the general manager's chair: Tornike Shengelia, Džanan Musa and Dāvis Bertāns all arrived with EuroLeague pedigree already behind them.

The club skipped the usual climb through domestic basketball altogether. It joined the ABA League for the 2024/25 season, then the EuroLeague a year later, becoming the first non-European team admitted to that competition in 24 years. Playing home games thousands of kilometres from every rival in the group phase is unusual enough that Dubai's away trips read more like tour scheduling than a normal league fixture list.

The ABA League title arrived fast. In the 2025/26 season Dubai beat Partizan Mozzart Bet 3-1 in the final, a first piece of silverware barely two years after the club existed on paper at all. Partizan and Crvena Zvezda have become the closest thing Dubai has to rivals, not through geography but through repeated meetings in the same competitions.

There is no derby to speak of — no neighbouring club in Dubai plays at this level — and the Dubai Basketball Academy that carries the club's name has yet to produce a player whose path to the first team is documented. A EuroLeague campaign, the competition the club was really assembled for, is still to be played.
