The volleyball at VV Humann Essen started as a school programme, at the Carl-Humann-Gymnasium in the Steele district, named for the archaeologist who gave the school its name. When the pupils' team outgrew that setting, the club was formed in 1967 to carry it forward, and the connection to the classroom never quite left it: youth volleyball became the thing Essen did best. The A-Jugend side took the German Youth Championship in 1976 and again in 1987, and decades later the same production line was still turning out West German youth titles at every age group.

The senior men took longer to catch up. Essen won the 2. Bundesliga North in 2003 and again in 2004, promotion following each time. A slip into the 3. Liga West followed in 2012/13, but a runner-up finish there sent them straight back to the second tier. Stefan Windscheif, who had already made his name as a European under-20 beach volleyball champion, played for the club during that spell in the 2. Bundesliga.

They play now at the Sporthalle Gymnasium Wolfskuhle, a 500-seat hall that keeps the derbies against Moerser SC and TuS Mondorf close and loud.
