The nuclear enrichment facility in Rawalpindi fielded a departmental side in the Pakistani domestic system, entering first-class cricket for the 1997–98 season. Among them Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Amir and Shoaib Akhtar, who turned out for the side for more than a decade.

The team's honours board is thin at the top: a Patron's Trophy Grade II won in 1994–95, runner-up finishes in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in 2002–03 and 2008–09, and further second-place finishes in the National One Day Cup Division Two through the following decade. Then, in May 2019, the Pakistan Cricket Board dissolved the departmental structure altogether in favour of regional teams, and KRL disappeared from the fixture list. It was lifted in August 2023, and the side returned to domestic cricket that season in the President's Trophy, going on to win the President's Cup in 2025–26.

Their rivalries belong to that same departmental era and its revival.

KRL plays its cricket at a Rawalpindi ground holding 8,000 spectators, known for years simply as the KRL Cricket Stadium. In March 2021 it was renamed the Shoaib Akhtar Stadium, after the fast bowler who grew up in the city.
