Malvern City go into this season in the Victorian Men's State League Division One South-East, the division they won outright in 2025. Whatever comes next, the small ground at Sir Zelman Cowen Park in Kooyong won't hold more than 500 people watching it happen.

The club started in 1976 as a men's senior side put together by a group of enthusiasts, playing home matches at Central Park on the corner of Burke and Wattletree before the move to its current ground on Glenferrie Road in 1983, then still known as Kooyong Park. Junior teams followed in 1978, the same year the senior side won its first championship. Stonnington now counts Malvern City as its largest club, with more than 500 players registered across its teams.

One name from the junior ranks carries further than the rest: Ange Postecoglou turned out for the club in 1995, playing as a defender and scoring three goals in three matches in what was then Victorian State League Division Four. Connor Pain spent two seasons at the club either side of 2010 before moving into the A-League, where he passed a century of appearances.

Derby day means Clarinda FC. Both clubs draw heavily on Melbourne's Greek community, and the fixture gets billed in the local press as the all-Greek derby, a tag that Malvern's other regular opponents in the Victorian Premier League 2 — Springvale White Eagles, Eastern Lions, Kingston City — don't carry.

Beyond the 1992 Division One title and last year's championship, the trophy cabinet stays thin.
