Islamabad's cricket identity runs through its state-linked companies as much as through club sides, and OGDCL is one of the corporation-backed teams that gives the capital a presence in the domestic first-class game. The parent company itself dates to 1961, but the cricket side built its name far more recently.

The team's breakthrough came in June 2024, when it won the President's Trophy Grade-II. Raja Hamza Waheed's unbeaten 143 in the final settled the title and, with it, earned OGDCL promotion to the Grade-I, first-class tier for the 2024–25 season — a jump from the tournament where it had spent most of its history to the level where Pakistan's leading domestic cricketers play.

As a departmental team, OGDCL has no ground of its own to call home; it has played its fixtures at the National Stadium in Karachi, at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex, and on grounds in Islamabad, moving between venues as the fixture list demands. Imam-ul-Haq has captained the side through its recent seasons.

Having only just arrived among the first-class sides, OGDCL now faces the harder task familiar to every promoted team.
