Nikita Mikhailis captained Barys Astana for years before that. Snezhnye Barsy exists to produce players like him: Daulet Kenbayev, Talgat Zhailauov and Vladislav Saiko all passed through on their way to the senior side and, in several cases, the Kazakhstan national team.

The club has changed its name once, to Snezhnye Barsy Nur-Sultan, between 2019 and 2022, tracking the capital's own renaming before both reverted. It has also stepped away from its main competition and come back: after leaving the Major Junior Hockey League in 2021 to play in the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship, it returned to the MHL for the 2023–24 season. Its best run there remains a Conference Quarterfinal finish in 2015–16, and the Harlamov Cup has not come to Astana.

On the ice it wears black and red at home, white and red away. Within Kazakhstan the sharper rivalry is local, against Nomad Astana, alongside the longer-standing one with Saryarka Karaganda.

Back in the MHL after two seasons away, the team is rebuilding its position in a league where it has never gone further than a conference quarter-final.
