Monagas Sport Club has been the tenant ever since.

Monagas took the Torneo Apertura first, drawing 2-2 with Caracas over two legs and going through on away goals, then came back at the end of the year and beat Deportivo Lara 2-1 on aggregate in the Serie Final for the national championship. By December 2017 it was champion of Venezuela.

The blue and maroon came from somewhere less grand. In 1988, a year after the club was founded in September 1987, vice-president Francisco Espinoza — known to everyone as Paso — proposed the colours after Barcelona's kit, and they stuck. So did the name that followed: Los Azulgranas, the blue-and-maroons, which is what the club is still called in Maturín when nobody is being formal about it.

The other nicknames reach further back than the club does. Guerreros del Guarapiche takes the river that runs past the city; Guerreros Chaima takes the indigenous people who lived in the region long before there was a state called Monagas or a football team to represent it. Both are older ideas than anything on the trophy shelf, and both get used more often than the founding year.

Espinoza is the one name that has outlasted the rest of it. He was not a player, and the colours he suggested in 1988 were a suggestion — but nearly four decades on, every shirt in the ground is still his.
