Caernarfon Town

Caernarfon Town beat Flint Town United 3-0 in the 2025-26 Welsh Cup final. It came in a season the team spent away from home, playing its football at Maesdu Park in Llandudno while The Oval, its ground since 1888, was rebuilt; the club is due back for 2026-27.

The club formed in 1937, put together by local supporters after earlier Caernarfon sides — Carnarvon Athletic, Caernarvon Ironopolis, Caernarvon United — had all folded. It spent the 1980s and into the 1990s playing across the border in the English pyramid, in the Lancashire Combination and the Northern Premier League, before becoming one of the founding members of the Welsh League in 1995, the competition now known as the Cymru Premier.

Under John King the team reached the third round of the FA Cup in 1986-87, knocking out York City along the way. Darren Thomas holds the appearance and scoring records at the club, with more than 400 games and over 100 goals; among those who left Caernarfon for bigger stages, Wyn Davies went on to play for Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Wales.

Supporters know the team as the Canaries, for the yellow shirts and green shorts, and as the Cofis, a nickname shared with the town itself. Derby day brings Bangor City, though Porthmadog is the fixture Caernarfon itself treats as the true local rivalry, and Bala Town has become the meeting the modern press calls the Gwynedd derby. None of it traces back further than a group of townspeople deciding, in 1937, that Caernarfon needed a club of its own again.
