Deportes Iquique

The name on the badge came back only in December 2010. In 2002 the club went bankrupt and was expelled from professional football altogether, dropping to the Tercera División under a different identity, Municipal Iquique. It climbed back the hard way — winning the third tier in 2006, reaching the top flight again by 2008 — before the Chilean federation let the historic name return in 2010.

What the club had before the collapse, and rebuilt after, is a habit of winning the Copa Chile against the odds. The first came in 1980, beating Colo-Colo 2-1 in the final within two years of formation — Deportes Iquique itself was born in 1978 from a merger of two Iquique sides, Cavancha and Estrella de Chile. The second arrived in 2010, the same year the name returned, with a penalty shootout win over Deportes Concepción after 0-0. A third followed in the 2013-14 final against Huachipato.

Home games are played at Estadio Tierra de Campeones, which holds 13,171. In 2012, a third-place finish in the Apertura sent the club into the following year's Copa Libertadores, a rare taste of continental football in a history otherwise built on domestic cup runs and second-tier titles rather than the league crown itself.
