Völsungur

No club has topped Iceland's second tier as often as Völsungur. Six times the side from Húsavík has won 2. deild karla, or its earlier guise as 3. deild karla — in 1968, 1971, 1979, 1995, 2003 and 2012 — a run no other club in the division has matched. Getting up, though, proved easier than staying up.

The one occasion Völsungur turned a second-tier title into a place in Iceland's top flight came in 1986. The following season, spent among the elite, ended with the club bottom of the table and relegated within a year.

The Icelandic Cup has been kinder in memory than in silverware: the furthest Völsungur has gone is a quarter-final, in 1974, lost 0-2 to ÍA.

Two products of the Húsavík academy went on to play for Iceland's national team — Pálmi Rafn Pálmason, capped 18 times, and Hallgrímur Jónasson, capped 16. On the women's side, founded in 1979, Hulda Ágústsdóttir came through to represent Iceland at youth level, and the team itself won 2. deild kvenna in 2019 to reach the second tier of the women's game.

Geography supplies the fixtures that matter most: KA Akureyri and Þór Akureyri, the two clubs from the region's largest town, are the opponents Húsavík has measured itself against longest.

The team plays in green and white, carries the nickname Green Army, and is watched at Húsavíkurvöllur, a ground holding 2,000. Völsungur itself began in 1927, as a multi-sport club for the town.
