ХПС Women edged Ilves 1:0 in the fourth round of the Kansallinen liiga Championship Playoffs on Saturday evening. Stina Anna Simonen provided the decisive moment in the second half, finding the net to separate two sides that had met just weeks earlier. The result leaves both clubs within touching distance of each other in the standings.
Ilves came into the fixture with momentum after a win over ХПС in late July, but those memories faded quickly enough. Simonen broke the deadlock in the fifty-third minute, ending a barren spell for her side. She then wore the yellow card that came six minutes later, a small price for the breakthrough.
Ilves pushed for an equaliser and saw three players brought on around the sixty-second mark. Puolakka, Lamberg and Stark all entered the fray in quick succession, but ХПС kept their heads under pressure. Amelia Luotonen joined the hosts' changes shortly after, while ХПС added three more substitutions in the seventy-seventh minute to see out the final quarter.
By then the game had settled into a rhythm that favoured the home side. ХПС sit fourth on 24 points from fourteen matches, three ahead of Ilves in fifth. The visitors arrived with a recent record that included a heavy defeat to Åland United, and this narrow loss does little to ease that concern.
